NYS reveals 21,000 cases of identity theft

New York State’s Department of Motor Vehicles upgraded its facial recognition technology in January 2016. Since the program was launched, the Facial Recognition Technology Program has led to the revelation of over 21,000 possible cases of fraud and identity theft. The program has even resulted in over 4,000 arrests.

Having your identity stolen can be a devastating experience, especially if it keeps showing up for years down the road. The new facial recognition system has upgraded from being able to identify 64 points on a person’s face and now it can recognize 128 points. Some of the things that the system looks for when identifying an individual include scars, hairlines, eye color, glasses, hair styles, and more. One issue that came up frequently was fraudulent Commercial Driver’s Licenses.

The breakdown of arrests between January 2016 and July 2017 by region in New York are as follows. There were 48 arrests in the Mid-Hudson Valley, 122 in New York City, 56 in Long Island, and many more in other regions throughout the state.

If you have been arrested and charged with identity fraud, it is important to be aware that you will likely face serious penalties. Fraud in New York State is taken very seriously. You should contact an experienced criminal defense attorney as soon as possible if you have been charged with identity theft or other fraudulent behavior.
